The San Antonio Museum of Art was originally the site of the Lone Star Brewery, which opened its doors in 1884. The complex was purchased by Adolphus Busch in 1892 and from 1895 to 1904 the original wooden structures were replaced with stone. Buildings included horse stables, a hops house, and copper and blacksmith shops, several of which are still standing on the grounds today. Built in the grant style often associated with nineteenth-century breweries in America, the two towers and there crenellated parapets are an established part of the San Antonio skyline. By the mid-20th century, the brewery buildings had fallen into disrepair and were all but abandoned. Community leaders saw the potential in the buildings' distinctive architecture and dramatic interior spaces, and they set about to transform the site into a striking example of adaptive reuse of historic buildings. In 1977, Mayor Lila Cockrell christened the new San Antonio Museum of Art by smashing a bottle of beer against the facade, and the Museum welcomed its first visitors in March, 1981.
